The management and staff of Discovery Place Child Care Centre are committed to providing the best possible care and positive learning experiences to our families. Our ECE trained and experienced staff focus on meeting each individual child's developmental and educational needs.
Infant Room
0-18 MONTHS OLD
This programs plan provides the basis for the growth and development of each infant
Program Description
Infants grow and develop at such a rapid rate that sometimes it is hard to keep up. Programming for the infants is based on each child and their current developmental stage. Individual program plans provide the basis for growth and development of each infant and take into account their cognitive, social, emotional, language, gross and fine motor skills.
As well as individual program plans, group activities are planned including songs and story periods, outdoor play time, creative art sessions and sensory play. Each child has the opportunity to participate in all activities with as much or as little assistance as they require.
We encourage parents to visit, call or “check-in” as we understand that this may be an emotional time for you and your baby. Communication between staff and parents is extremely important at this age.
Daily conferences sometimes just long enough to establish what your child ate at home and when they were last changed are valuable information exchanges that assist the staff in planning your child’s day. Daily sheets give you an insight into the day with information including what your child ate and drank and when, activities they participated in and diaper changes.
The infant staff are extremely professional and experienced giving each child individual attention and consistently working with them to attain each developmental milestone. Our centre offers a clean, safe and nurturing environment establishing a calm and familiar daily routine. Transitions from home to daycare become smooth and stress free as the infants develop bonds of trust and caring, in an atmosphere designed to feel like home away from home.
Toddler Room
18 MONTHS-2 1/2 YEARS OLD
Toddlers are constantly testing limits and investigating how things work
Program Description
Toddlers are great explorers. Each day brings a new adventure and many challenges. Toddlers are constantly testing limits and investigating how things work. They strive for independence, but still need the comfort that structure provides.
The staff in the toddler room guide exploration and foster problem solving and creativity. Social skills and peer interaction are integrated with listening, learning, and cooperation in group activities. Teachers expand on children’s verbal skills using various techniques such as echo, active listening, OWL (observe, wait and listen), and repetition. One on one interactions are a focus to encourage the growth and development of language. Daily reports are given when you pick you child up.
The toddler program is set up to provide structure and routine allowing time for children to play and explore in a safe and secure environment. The activities are created to appeal to the children’s senses and focus on all developmental domains, (cognitive, social, emotional, gross and fine motor and physical). Self help skills such as dressing and feeding themselves are practiced daily and toilet training is a cooperative process undertaken by both parent and caregiver. This makes the experience consistent at home and daycare for the child, increasing his sense of independence and autonomy.
Preschool Program
2.5-4 YEARS OLD
These are the years that prepare your child for the school experience and beyond.
Program Description
The preschool years (2 ½ -5) are an opportunity for learning that almost knows no bounds. With minds like sponges, preschoolers learn through play experiences and expand their knowledge at an incredible rate. These are the years that prepare your child for the school experience and beyond.
Because children learn best through experiences they are interested in, programs are developed from daily experiences, expanding on ideas that the children express an interest in. For example, a teacher may observe the children watching a butterfly in the playground and note that the children continue their interest over lunch.
The next day the teacher has planned group activities, creative experiences and brought books that deal with the life cycle of the butterfly. All activities and equipment allow for open-ended discussions and communication that allow the children to expand their learning through concrete experiences and critical thinking.
Staff plan experiences designed to foster positive social interactions and provide opportunities for fun, hands on, interactive play that prepare the children for a future filled with friends and a love of learning that will carry them through life.
Kindergarten Program
4-5 YEARS OLD
Teachers provide a smooth transition to formal education through personal learning experiences
Program Description
As your child begins school, a new phase of life begins. Math and language activities are introduced and the children progress through addition, subtraction, and pre reading lessons at their own pace, when they are ready. Group activities are subject focused and allow children to explore, investigate and play while promoting creative expression.
Teachers provide a smooth transition to formal education through personal learning experiences that foster self-esteem and nurture a lifelong love of learning through educationally enriching programming. Positive social interactions are promoted through co-operation, team building activities and building friendships with peers.
